Examine how attitudes towards linguistic standards empower and oppress language users.  Explore how views on language standards can affect speakers positively and negatively    4 In class discussions and readings, I learned how “standard English” may give certain individuals more credit while unfairly comparing others based on their accents or dialect. For example, in my literacy narrative, I discussed adapting my language after migrating from Bangladesh to the United States, which helped me understand how language may require help and separate people.
Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.  Understand and analyze various styles of writing, as well as how they differ based on purpose and audience.  2In my visual argument assignment, I wondered how pictures’ tone and structure determine meaning.
Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing.  Develop ways of better understanding readings and improving my writing through preparation, communication, rewriting, and editing.  4Throughout the semester, I revised multiple drafts of my essays. Peer review helped me identify grammar issues and strengthen my ideas. My drafts improved each time.
Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations.  When writing, use rhetorical tools like ethos, pathos, and logos.  3In my visual argument analysis, I discovered how ethos and pathos were employed to influence the viewer’s emotional response. I also used rhetorical methods in my personal essay.
Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences.  Use a variety of online and print platforms to successfully interact with a wide range of readers.  4I also looked through academic databases and used internet platforms to properly format work for academic audiences.
Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.Find research resources and determine whether they are reliable, up to date, and fair.  3I compared articles to see which ones had trustworthy evidence and minimum bias.
Compose texts that integrate a stance with appropriate sources, using strategies such as summary, analysis, synthesis, and argumentation.Write essays that clearly communicate my point of view and support it with evidence through summary, analysis, and argument.  3I practiced combining concepts from different publications into a single logical argument.
Practice systematic application of citation conventions.Learn how to apply citation styles (such as MLA) accurately and consistently.  3For my synthesis essay, I used MLA in-text citations and a Works Cited page. I also learned how to properly reference digital sources.
